Jake loves to read and always has his nose in a book. Sometimes when he gets grounded he even looses his reading privileges.

When he started 6th Grade at La Vernia Elementary he took two STAR computer-adaptive tests, one for reading and one for math. Going by the standard these tests follow they were administered when Jake was at 6.1 Level, meaning he was in the first month of 6th Grade.

On the STAR computer-adaptive reading test he scored at a 10.8 Level. Based on the national norms, Jacob reads at a level equal to that of a typical tenth grader after the eighth month of school year. Jacob reads at a level greater than 94% of other students nationally in the same grade.

The test results are posted at the left if you would like to take a look click on the test and it will appear bigger on a new page.

He also took a STAR computer-adaptive math test in which he tested at a 7.4 Level, based on the national norms, Jakes math skills are equal to that of a typical seventh grader after the fourth month of school. His skills are higher than 75% of students nationally in the same grade.

These test results are also shown here to the right.

You are also welcome to send Jake an email to let him know you're proud of him or just to say hi!

Jake is doing very well in school this year, he is in 7th Grade which means he just started Junior High! Yikes! He is taking all advanced classes this year. The advanced classes will count toward high school credits, as long as his grades stay above a 70.

Jake is very likable and has a lot of friends this year. He was recently given a couple of books, signed by the author, from the school principal. One of the books is not even due to hit the shelves until this summer. I will have to get the book information from him (sorry!) he reads so many different series I cannot remember which one this is.

Kolten has to read for 20 minutes every night and then write down what he has read but due to his autism he still cannot read and his writing is barely legible. Jacob, being the good brother that he is, has started reading a chapter book to Kolten every night. After they read for 20 minutes Kolten tells me what Jake read to him and I write it down for him. Jake also helps Kolten with his math and science homework on occasion. There are nights when between the three of them there is so much homework that if it wasn't for Jake helping Kolten I don't know what I'd do! We are lucky to have such a sweet kid!

At the end of last year Jake was one of 5 (out of 200) students chosen to receive the Principals Award. Only he and one other student were actually selected by the Principal, the others were chosen by teachers.

Jake the Author
Jake is a very smart young man. As an assignment for Reading Class, he wrote a novel called "Legalis". It is a remarkable story about a boy named Legalis who dreams of becoming a Dragon Rider. For an eleven-year-old Jake did a marvelous job and we are very proud of him. I have included his story below and hope that you will take the time to read it and send feedback to let Jake know what you think!

The above award reads:

La Vernia Elementary School
Principal's Award
is presented to
Jacob Foster

in recognition of his outstanding achievement in Accelerated Reader and for sharing his love for books and reading with others.

Jake's birthday is October 13. He was born in 1995 and is almost 13 years old. Jake is the big brother of Megan and Kolten. When he grows up Jake says he wants to be either a Biologist or an Architect.

Jake is a very loving and sweet boy. He has a great sense of humor.

Besides reading, Jake also enjoys playing video games and watching television. Baseball is his favorite sport and his favorite subject is science.

Creativity
Jake is very creative. He built this castle out of some pieces of wood that he got from school. Dad helped him cut out the draw bridge but he did the rest by himself. He is currently working on a paper city SPV or Stick Paper Ville. All of the buildings, roads, and parking lots are made out of paper and of course the streets are lined with stick people. I will include pictures of it once he finishes.

Having Lunch at the San Antonio Zoo
Jake's 5th Grade field trip was to the San Antonio Zoo. Mom went as a chaperone. It was a lot of fun. Before going back to school the whole class and parents and teachers met for a picnic. We found a spot by the water. As you can see from the picture, there's a path that people could drive their cars through, we had to try that before going home!
